Is It Time to Replace Your Phone Battery?

If you’re living on 12%, let us be the first to say: no one should live like that.

If your phone battery keeps dying, it could be at the end of its life. Or not.

Read on to get some phone battery troubleshooting tips, so you’ll know whether it’s time to swap it out, just change your charger or upgrade your phone because you wanted to anyway.

Smartphone Battery Life

Most people want to know how long a battery lasts in a single session of being powered on. With most smartphone batteries, you’ll get around 10 hours with moderate use. More on that in a second.

The other important thing you should know, if you think your phone battery is dying, is how many years it should last. On average, a lithium-ion phone battery lasts 2-3 years, or for about 500 charge cycles. So, if your battery isn’t lasting and it’s more than three years old, you may be ready for a replacement.

Because it’s top-of-the-market and super popular, you probably want to know how long your iPhone battery will last.

iPhone 12 Battery Life

Ha. If only it were that simple. Of course, iPhone 12 comes in mini, regular, Pro and Pro Max. Some of these impact battery life. Here’s the breakdown:

  • iPhone mini battery life averages 7.5 hours on 5G
  • iPhone 12 battery life averages 8 hours on 5G
  • iPhone 12 Pro battery life averages 9 hours on 5G
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max battery life averages 11 hours on 5G

How long your iPhone 12 battery lasts isn’t only impacted by internet speed but also screen brightness.

Best Phone Battery Life: Who Wins?

Whether you travel or just need to always be online to update your IG Reels, buying a phone with a long battery life may be priority number one. Makes sense. Here are the smartphones with the best battery life:

Moto G Power

This battery champion can last 14, sometimes 16 hours. It has a 5,000 mAh battery that makes it one of the longest lasting devices out there. Bonus points: it’s only $250.

LG V60 ThinQ 5G

Want a battery to last you through an entire work day and then some? This LG model clocks in at nearly 13 hours.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

Samsung’s Galaxy S20 Ultra can last almost 12 hours and has the same mega-charge battery as the Moto G Power. A key will be how you set your screen refresh rate (60Hz is going to get you close to 12 hours; the 120Hz is going to deplete it faster).

iPhone 11 Pro Max

The best iPhone for battery life is still the iPhone 11 Pro Max. It comes with an 18-watt charger. It has a bigger battery and a more efficient processor than the 10s and is still averaging faster than the 12s, with nearly 12 hours in the right conditions.

How to Make Your Phone Battery Last Longer

You must already know that user behavior impacts battery life. Always roaming? Problem. Never on WiFi? Problem. You can take some strategic steps to make your battery last longer (without putting it in the dreaded Power Saver mode).

  • Change the screen refresh rate and brightness. Lower is better for your battery life.
  • Pay attention to what’s running in the background. If you’ve got your workout app tracking steps, a bunch Safari or Chrome screens, etc., it’s going to drain your battery.
  • Turn off location services. We know you want your coupon once you walk into the radius of Starbucks, but if your battery is low, this will save some juice.
  • Change push notifications. These run in the background and take up battery life.

If worst comes to worst, put it in airplane mode. We know, but sometimes there’s no other choice.

Smartphone Battery Replacement

So, if the average smartphone battery lasts about three years, some of us switch phones that often. In that case, smartphone battery replacement may not be needed. However, if your battery gets damaged, blown out by bad power sources or has another issue, you still may look at a battery replacement.

First, check if your cell phone battery is still in warranty. If it isn’t, you can head to any IT repair shop to get an estimate. Depending on what kind of phone you have, you may want to go to an authorized service center. Of course, quality service will cost a little more.

A smartphone battery replacement usually takes about a week, depending on whether the right stuff is in stock. Once it’s replaced, you shouldn’t have any more issues.
