Funko Pop: Holiday 2020

A-dor-a-ble. That’s really the word to describe Funko Pops. Whether you’re low-key into anime or have kids who can’t resist the big-eyed version of their favorite Pixar character, Funko Pops have probably come across your radar. And they are definitely part of this year’s holiday gift-giving. Funko was actually founded in 1998 to provide nostalgia-themed, low-tech toys. They started out with Bobbleheads and grew from there into a multi-million dollar toy making machine. You can buy any and every kind of Funko you can imagine.  Want to buy for the history buff on your list? There’s a Benjamin Franklin (with kite) Funko Pop for that. Paul Feig? Sure. Predator? You betcha. Indiana Jones? No doubt. A Funko Pop for every occasion. And, why not? Read on to learn more about the most popular Funko Pops of 2020 and get a sneak peek into what’s coming out in 2021.

Funko Pops

Most Funko Pops are about four inches and made completely out of vinyl. Crafted on a 1:20 scale, they are a big-eyed, simplified version of the characters they’re designed to reflect. Scores of Funko Pops have been made, often coming out alongside big Box Office movies and even released alongside new video games. Funko Pops’ licensed characters run the gamut from mainstream to downright quirky. Because they have such a broad selection, they are a fun, lighthearted and possibly perfect gift for kids and adults on your list. Some of the most popular Funko Pops in 2020 are downright nerdtastic. And we’re not complaining.

Baby Yoda Pop

Whether you’re a purist or open-minded, it’s no doubt that the Star Wars franchise got a major profile boost from the Mandalorian. One of the most popular characters of the series is, of course, Baby Yoda. While tons of toys have made the aged Jedi master accessible to all ages, the Baby Yoda Pop is one of the most popular Funko Star Wars options. Maybe he’ll be part of a general Star Wars holiday theme or just tucked into a stocking: Baby Yoda is sure to make an appearance in a lot of homes and the Funko Pop version is a cheap and fun way to do it.

Animal Crossing Pop

The super popular Nintendo game, Animal Crossing, gave rise to the second most popular Funko Pop toys this year. Animal Crossing Funko Pops represent all of the already-cute characters from the game. Because Animal Crossing is geared towards young children, getting the Funko Pop characters is a no-brainer. Kids will love the simple, soft figurines, and can collect everyone: Beppe, Booker, C.J., Copper, Daisy Mae, Farley, Porter, Tom Nook, Wisp, etc.

Dr. Pepper Pop

TV series, movie and video game characters aren’t the only occupants of the Funko Pop universe. Ad icons dropped this year, personifying popular brands like Dr. Pepper (a musically talented rocker with a five o’clock shadow), Ronald McDonald (just like himself, only poppier), Colonel Sanders (holding a bucket of chicken), the Morton Salt Girl (complete with a purple umbrella) and even a “Fanta Clown,” styled after the vibrant retro soda brand. Funko Pops are most popular in their small, figurine version but that isn’t all the company offers. You can buy multiple iterations of the most popular characters in everything from keychains to apparel. In other words, the empire is big and shows no signs of stopping.

(Other) Popular Funko Pops

Funko Pop is kind of everywhere: Reddit threads, Pinterest boards and even Etsy shops. Here are some of the other, most popular Funko Pops that you can get your hands on this season:
  • Scranton Boys: are you a huge fan of The Office? Remember when Michael and Dwight do the Scranton rap video? There’s a Funko Pop set of the two of them in their ski caps and urban get-up.
  • Inspector Gadget: go old-school with a highly posed Inspector Gadget character, straight out of the ‘90s. He’s on skates and has a police siren perched on top of his inspector cap.
  • Ron Weasley at the World Cup: Harry Potter is a major player in the Funko Pop universe, and you don’t just have to buy standard versions in wizard robes. The characters all make plenty of appearances, outfitted to reflect various scenes in the movie.
  • Alien as Bullseye: again, taking a familiar character, Funko-Popping it and then dressing it up as something else is a surefire way that the company has been able to get repeat customers. It works, as is illustrated by this ridiculously cute Tory Story alien dressed up as Bullseye the horse.
Not even sure where to begin? Funko Pop’s website is super easy to navigate and buy from. To dive even further, you can definitely find people willing to make you custom knock-offs or who are reselling Funko Pops that are sold out online.
